FungiSmiles: A Smarter Solution to Steep Slopes and Fire Risk

A Smarter Solution to Steep Slopes and Fire Risk: Fungal Solutions

In our final newsletter for 2025, we continue our firewise theme offering a new, eco-friendly solution for many of us who own hillside property.

You already know the struggles—erosion, thin soils, unstable rocks on the slopes and the constant worry about fire. Traditional fixes like concrete walls or metal meshes are costly and not always sustainable. They also aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing.

That’s why we teamed up with Fungal Solutions-Wildfire Ltd to share a solution we’ve piloted and are now offering: Slope-Side BioBerms.

What Are BioBerms?

BioBerms are small burlap bundles filled with woodchips, beneficial fungi, and pioneer plant seeds. When placed on slopes, they act as living barriers: slowing down water, catching fine soil, and sparking a natural cycle of growth. Over time, fungi knit the woodchips together and transform them into water-holding soil, while grasses and wildflowers establish strong root systems that hold the slope together.

Why They’re a Game-Changer

  • Erosion Control – BioBerms slow water down and fill in with soil, gentling the slope over time.

  • Fire Resilience – Fungal networks store moisture, creating natural “wet spots” that resist ignition and can help stop fire spread.

  • Set It and Forget It Landscaping – Once established, slopes need zero irrigation because fungal soils retain water like a sponge. They only need a little watering during prolonged drought periods.

  • Tailored Solutions – Whether your property has steep slopes or gentler grades, BioBerms can be shaped to fit.

This is how a BioBerm looks like on installation and before the fungal networks knit themselves into the slope.

Why This Matters for You

By choosing BioBerms, you’re investing in a solution that helps protect your property while working with natural systems. You’re going beyond just preventing erosion. You’re creating balconies of thriving plants that stay green longer and stand stronger against fire.
